Waterproof Solutions
Protection from harsh environment could be subject to lots of extreme temperatures, or wet or dusty conditions. Or it could be all of those at the same time. The following two standards are important as tests to verify the equipment’s protection ability from the harsh conditions:
IEC 60529
This standard classifies and rates the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water. Some Ingress Protection (IP) codes have been used as criteria for verifying the protection level designed with KTI’s water-proof products. The simplified meaning of each level is:
IP65 | No ingress of dust; complete protection against dust contact No harmful effect protection against water jets from any direction |
IP66 | No ingress of dust; complete protection against dust contact No harmful effect protection against powerful water jets from any direction |
IP67 | No ingress of dust; complete protection against dust contact No ingress of water under water 1 meter depth for 30 minutes |
IEC 60068-2-11
This is an environmental test standard that can be used to test the relative resistance to corrosion of protective coatings, when exposed to a salt mist (spray) climate at an elevated temperature. It is especially recommendable for products which are used (in operation) close to coast or at sea. Salt spray testing is also a standard in the Automotive Industry for components. The test duration represents an estimated figure for the protection ability.
